Of the many sacrifices military spouses make, career advancement and job security can be one of the most frustrating. Relocating every few years can make it difficult to build a career, and many spouses find themselves challenged with reinventing themselves with each PCS move.
90 percent of military wives are underemployed or have no job, according to a recent report put out by the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), and those that are employed, the study notes, earn significantly less – almost 40% less – than their counterparts in the civilian sector. And for young military wives age 18-24, the underemployment rate when compared to civilian counterparts is even higher, the study shows.
The DOD is aware of the challenges and sacrifices military families are making, and is working to provide “a broad spectrum of career opportunities … for a range of education and experience levels,” a DOD spokesperson told ABC News.
But it’s just not that simple, military wives told ABC News, claiming that while jobs may be available, it seems that a number of employers – justifiably or no – hesitate to hire military family members because they worry that they’ll only have to find a replacement when the employee moves to follow her spouse to the next duty station.
With ever-changing technology that allows for teleconferencing, remote work-desks, and cloud-based storage and sharing of files, work-from-home opportunities are becoming more feasible. With almost three million individuals working primarily from home, as of a 2011 study, and almost 30 million working from home at least one day each week, the possibilities – and opportunities – are growing, says Ranker.com, pointing to the following list of 51 flexible or work-from home jobs that pay well, according to data gleaned from the Bureau of Labor Stataistics, Payscale.com and Glassdoor.com.
