The first time I visited my son on base, what happened at the 5:00 pm bugle call definitely caught me off guard. The fact that there was a bugle call wasn’t a surprise, but what everyone — and I mean everyone — around me did sure was!

When you hear “Retreat,” if you are outdoors, etiquette requires that you stand and face the flag or music, say the authors of Basics From the Barracks. For “Reveille and “To the Colors,” they add, you should put your hand over your heart or salute, if in uniform. Children should stop playing and observe the custom as well. If you are in a car, depending upon the rules of the installation and the flow of traffic, you should — without blocking traffic — get out and stand or simply stop the car and remain quietly seated.
