milmomAlthough the number of troops being deployed has diminished significantly, I still have friends whose sons (and in one case, daughter) are now, or soon-to- be deployed.

When I first learned that my son would be deployed to Iraq a few years ago, it was through discussion with my military-wife friends that I learned I could be kept in the loop during his deployment through my son’s Family Readiness Group, or FRG.

FRGs are support groups for soldiers’ family members during times of deployment. Spouses and children usually attend FRG activities on base, but often parents of single soldiers, while included in the FRG, live far from base and must participate from afar. That was the case in my situation, so I was part of the VFRG, or virtual Family Readiness Group, and I was issued access to an online account and included in an email newsletter that kept me informed throughout the deployment.

For more information on FRGs and VFRGs, I’m sharing a couple of posts from the blog, Married to the Army. Blogger Stacy Abler and her guest editor Katherine Tiberghien each included some good information in their posts that I’m sure any new Army mom would find informative, and there is an excellent post on Millitary.com about Family Support Services for families of service members from each branch of the military, regardless of the military installation.

I found comfort during my son’s deployment through connecting with other military moms online, through Facebook pages, blogs and other social networking sites, some of which I still subscribe to, as do several of my friends who also happen to be military moms.

Two of my favorite Facebook pages — I always recommend them to friends whose children are in the service — are Blue Star Mothers and Army Mom Strong.

Fellow military parents, which sites do you follow?
