Unlike the kids I knew in high school, those military kids had a lot less uncertainty about their futures, and they seemed to possess a quiet confidence – a maturity beyond their years – that I lacked at that age. Their families were from all over the United States, their parents worked in a wide range of professions, and each teen had followed a different path from post to post, changing schools along the way. The common denominators, I determined, were the attitudes and involvement of the parents.
That experience definitely influenced how I later interacted with my child’s schools and teachers, and I have observed that it doesn’t matter who you are or how long you have lived in any one location, as long as you are involved in your child’s learning, you make the effort to connect with your community and neighbors and you choose to have a positive attitude, your child will thrive. And so will you.
