A record number turned out for the annual Carry The Load 2014 National Relay, a 2,000-mile relay with 348 legs from West Point, NY to Dallas, TX. Participants compete each year in teams, according to the organization’s website, in an epic show of support for the American heroes who work to keep us safe every day.

The 2014 National Relay for Carry The Load kicked off on April 29 in West Point, NY, and
concluded with  a 20-hour, 14-minute Memorial March in Dallas, TX, on Memorial Day weekend, according to a May 28 press release.

The vision of Carry The Load, according to the organization,  is to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day by connecting Americans to the sacrifices of our military, law enforcement, firefighters, and rescue personnel, and to support charitable organizations around the country that help them and their families.

“What was meant to be a day of remembering the sacrifices of our fallen military men and women has become a weekend of sales, barbecues and mini-vacations,” says Former Navy SEAL and veteran Clint Bruce, co-founder of Carry The Load, who adds, “though it is a wonderful weekend to celebrate family and the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, the true purpose of Carry The Load calls all of us to ‘never forget to remember’ those who made that ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.”

This year, according to the organization, Carry The Load was slated to have logged more than 2,000 miles across the nation with relay points in more than 230 cities, encouraging people in communities and towns throughout the route to join the National Relay in an effort to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day and share “who they are carrying.” The 2014 national nonprofit partners , according to the website, are Team RWB, TAPS, Snowball Express and Heroes on the Water.

“Carry The Load is excited to begin measuring the impact of the National Relay, the Dallas Memorial March and our other programs across America,” said Bruce. “We’re beginning to get a clear picture of the number of participants in all of the Carry The Load events and calculating the total amount of donations that will continue to pour in through early summer. Our initial estimates show more than 30,000 participants and almost $1.5 million dollars raised so far this year from all the events across the country.”
