Frozen Fever: Create The Perfect Elsa Costume

KRISTA 019 (1)HH6 Camo Chix Craft and DIY Contributor Krista Del Toro shares her tips and ideas in this second article for throwing a DIY “Frozen” – themed children’s party.

My  daughters both had “Frozen”-themed birthday parties, and topping each of their lists was to dress up like Elsa from the movie. The first thing I did was jump on the Internet to find a costume, but to my despair,  the Elsa costumes were sold out EVERYWHERE!!!! The only costumes you could find were ones people were selling for $200 dollars or more.

There was no way I was spending that much on a costume, so I started working up a design in my head.  I am not a good seamstress (yet), and having never sewed a dress before,  I decided to go the tutu-skirt way. I just love the look of tutus on girls!  I first tried making a long tutu of three-color tulle that was not cut in strips, but it did not look good. I then cut the tulle in to long floor length strips and sewed the strips of tulle on the elastic waste band.  I used glitter tulle in light blue, dark blue, and turquoise.

I was at a store one day and found a sheer, sparkly material that would look great as the cape in the back. I safety pinned it to the back of the leotard and front while my daughter was wearing it (no I did not poke her), and then I cut the fabric the way I wanted the cape to flow. We used a really pretty pendent that looked like a snowflake to fasten the cape to the back. I couldn’t find snowflake buttons or pins, so I used paper snowflakes and glued them to safety pins that were used to fasten the cape to the front.

I studied the dress from the movie and saw that the front looked like sequence so I knew I had to have sequence in the front. It took me a while to decide how to do the top. I had just sewed a top for Halloween and it was a nightmare, so I didn’t want to put myself through that again. My daughters were in ballet and I came up with the idea to use a leotard for the top, so I ordered one online.

We where living in Hawaii at the time and I worried that my choices of fabric would be limited, and I don’t like shopping online because it is hard to see what the fabric looks like. Luckily, a friend knew of a fabric store, and in spite of my worries that it would be extremely expensive, I decided to check it out. When I walked in to the store,  it was as if the angels where singing, “Aaahhhhhh!!” Every fabric you could ever want or need was available at reasonable (for Hawaii) prices. That shop truly was a shining diamond in the sands of paradise.

I settled on a beautiful sequin fabric that  was perfect for the top of the costume and was very happy and pleased with myself. On the drive home I determined to fashion the material into a “corset” that would fit over the top of the white leotard we had ordered. Unfortunately, things don’t always go as planned; as it turns out, sequin material is very flimsy and hard to work with, so a corset was out of the question. Frustrated, I scoured the internet for good ideas and finally settled on simply covering the front of the leotard like a corset.  Once that was done, we added a few rhinestones to the sleeves.

I am a firm believer that the hair makes a costume. I didn’t want to use a wig but we needed white hair, so I found some white hair extensions online for a very good price and braided them into her hair. I first did the front around the face part of the hair. I back brushed all around the face and bobby pinned it down and then pulled strands of hair out of the bobby pins — but not all the way out —  to make it look crazy like Elsa’s hair in the movie.

All the flyaway hairs got a touch of hairspray and then I pulled a small curling iron over them to make each flyaway stand straight out and then curve slightly on the ends.  A loose French braid in the back completed the hair.

Hint: I pulled the parts of the braid loose so the braid would look bigger coming down her shoulder, making sure that the  white showed the most.

Every princess needs a crown, and naturally all the Elsa crowns were out of stock. My daughters and I went to Claries and we discovered a beautiful crown that was a close match to the one Elsa wore.  We added a few “diamonds” to her hair (and a whole lot of glitter spray,) and the result was — beautiful Elsa hair!

I made this costume for the price of one you could buy at any Halloween store, but the quality is much higher, making it long lasting with little girls and the look of the costume is more attractive and elegant. It was well worth my time to make the Elsa costume since both of my girls wore it for their birthday parties and talent show performances.

Best of all, my daughters and I enjoyed the time spent together making, fitting, and sharing ideas for the costume.
