There just may be some science behind that old saying, “the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”
According to the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab article, Mood and Gender Relate to the Selection & Intake of Comfort Foods, by Zara Khaleeli, summarizing Physiology and Behavior article, Exploring Comfort Food Preferences Across Gender and Age, (Wansink, B., Cheney, M.M., & Chan, N., 2003), the roles men and women play in society, coupled with mood, may have something to do with their choices when it comes to comfort foods.
Mood plays a role in comfort-food cravings, the research shows, but the findings may surprise you.
“Contrary to popular belief,” Khaleeli writes, “we tend to eat comfort foods as a reward, and not when we are depressed, she says, adding, “about 86% of those surveyed say they seek out comfort foods while they are in a happy mood, as opposed to 36% who say they eat comfort foods when they were depressed.”
The research shows that mood also dictates the type of comfort food you reach for, Khaleeli says, adding that in one study, 38 secretaries were asked to watch one of two movies — one happy, the other depressing. The result? Those who watched the depressing movie , Khaleeli indicates, consumed significantly more hot buttery popcorn than their counterparts who saw the happy film.
Research, according to Khaleeli, indicates that ice cream tops the list for both men and women. The similarities stop there, however, with chocolate and cookies ranking high on the list along with ice cream as the comfort foods women seek. Men, on the other hand, would rather have ‘meal-type’ foods like soup and pizza/pasta.
The reason for this difference in food preferences, according to the research, could be considered “food for thought.”
Men, studies showed, tended to choose ‘meal-type’ comfort food because it made them feel taken care of. Women, on the other hand, indicated that those same ‘meal-type’ foods only made them think of all the work that goes into preparing the dishes.
The take-a-way if you both crave comfort food? (We think it’s a no-brainer) Go see a movie, but make it a happy one — that way you won’t eat so much hot, buttery popcorn that you can’t enjoy a little ice cream afterwards.
